Elisha Ben Avuyah was riveting to learn about. His belief that the material world and the spiritual world have nothing to do with one another thereby making religious practice irrelevant to life was a vital topic. I think many people grapple with the same issues. The end of the talk maybe could have said more than, living the religious life is a beautiful thing for itself. Well, it's also difficult, full of tedious holidays and Shabbat where you can't do anything. With many people quietly observing Shabbat alone in misery sleeping off their pain, I mean their "island of time." What's the point of that. I didn't even go into the fast days. Not to mention the lack of kosher restaurants everywhere. Following the religion is not really beautiful. It's just strange to subject oneself to such torture for what purpose? Oh yeah, olam haba.
